Jason November 26, 2014

hey everyone!

Sorry about not writing yesterday, I had to go to the Offices in Chihuahua (2 hours there, 2 hours back). i had to do a few things dealing with immigrations, because I have completed a year in mexico (today, actually), and so i need to review my visa. So exciting! I love this place :)

So, with that said, I am now able to write a bittoday, but with a little bit less time. How is everyone? from what i read, everything is going well for everyone. Here in Camargo, we are continuing to serve the Lord and our brothers and sisters in the gospel. We are planning and hoping on having a baptismal service for 4 of our investigators: Pedro, Karen, Andrea, and Andres. So many plans this week to get everything ready for their baptismal service, its crazy! but we are, nonetheless, very excited.

I am doing my best to continue to reflect on not only the things i have yet to do, but the things i have done here in the mission. I am thankful for My Savior for trusting me enough to serve him and his children, and I bear testimony that when we are repentant and worthy, with a desire to serve him, he will trust all of us to participate in this great work of Salvation. all that is required are ready hands, a broken heart, and a contrite spirit. I have been able to, this last week, notice and enjoy the little things that make these 2 years a joyful experience, and I am glad to be able to continue in the work.

May the Lord bless you all this week in all that you do, and remember: when we obey his commandments, he helps us and blesses us. #Obedience :) love you all!

Tender Mercies are Little Miracles

Hi everyone! I just have to say I'm so grateful for the example of my President and his wife Hermana Kirkham. I loved hearing from them on Saturday as well as Sunday! Since we're on an island and our stake is Cancun, we watched on a skype call and had some difficulties but they still perservered to call back 3 or 4 times so we could hear the words of our leaders. It was a testimony to me to think how blessed we are in the states to have conference so close.

But nevertheless I definitely felt the Spirit that conference. When the sound and video stopped working we were patient and I felt like the members were a little flustered at times and really distant from the meeting. But it was something really neat because just as the meeting was about over, we were singing the closing song and the program wasn't working yet again but what happened was when we couldn't hear the music, they decided to just keep singing and I just felt that it was really special. Here we are on an island, far away from the event but that didn't matter because they knew it was important and I thought they were flustered at times but then felt at the end perhaps not because we were there learning and being patient together. I can't explain it but it was something incredible the faith of them.

In other news, I am gaining a testimony of exact obedience! It's the little things you change that may seem like they don't matter but make a big difference. We have seen miracles this week and lots and LOTS of tender mercies. Especially with our logros (achievements of our goals). Heavenly Father helped us not only accomplish but exceed most of our goals this last week. It was amazing.

Just one example, last night, we needed to have talked to 27 people for HCT (Hablar con todos- introducing the gospel) to meet our goal and the expectation which is 70 every week. This seemed overwhelming since we had 29 for the whole week before but we had faith we could do it. We had just a few minutes left before we had to be home and 11 more people to find to introduce the church. We found a group of 5 people and still had just a few more. We had 5 minutes and very close to our house and I usually would've felt like we should just head around the corner home. But I had a feeling to walk just a few houses up the street from ours to find more people and we found three. We started talking to them and soon one by one 4 other people just came up from nowhere and for each one I reintroduced who we were. Even though I had just said it, usually I would've felt silly to have said it just seconds before but with a strong handshake and smile I felt prompted to tell each person that came up to the group. I can't explain it very well but it was just really special to have that happen. Not only did we get to offically meet our neighbors but Heavenly Father helped provide us with people to talk with AND meet another one of our goals.

It's the little things that matter. I am so grateful for those tender mercy moments from our Heavenly Father who blesses us with strength and desire to act especially when we need it!

Here's hoping and praying for the help for another great week for us and you all,

Hermana Newman

Natalie November 17, 2014

Hello all!
Wow I don't know where the time goes, this last week I completed 3 months in the mission and two in the field. So crazy where the time goes. How is the weather back home? It's cooled down a bit these last few weeks. So much in fact that everyone has jackets and beanies because they are so accustomed to the heat when it's a little chilly its cold for them haha. And to be honest, the Book of Mormon reading in Spanish is going really slow. I think I'm going to start making more time at night and even ask Hermana Andersen if we can wake up a little earlier so I can make have more time because the 30ish minutes for language study is good but we don't have language study M, Th, F or Sun. I want to be reading more so that is one of my goals.

In other news, I would say right now the biggest challenge we have is that our appointments fall through and we use our back up plans and the back ups of our backups and still struggle because people aren't home or can't meet afterall for one reason or another. However, we have found a few families from the lists that we are trying to correct and we couldn't be happier because we are strengthening them and one isn't actually baptized. The parents were but then separated and now their kids are all grown up so we are going to visit them because now they're our investigators! I am grateful that when our appointments get canceled, we can go visit the less active and I'm so happy that they are coming to church again! Also I loved the conference on Thursday we had with President and our little zone of 12 missionaries, that helped me so much. I just need to practice asking more questions and the right ones. Always room for improvement and for that I'm grateful.

As always, so much to do and say and so little time. Be safe and have fun! And challenge, write down a tender mercy every night that you saw from that day!

Much Love,
Hermana Newman

One year later...

Wow.

im speechless! I cant believe that this day has finally come. I have completed A YEAR in the mission! I have been thinking a ton about all that has happened in this past year, and let me tell ya...i wouldnt trade the laughs and memories, the lessons learned and given, the investigators, and the converts, for anything else in the world. I have become just that much more of a man, and It is still and will continue to be my goal to become that Missionary...that Man that Heavenly Father wants and needs me to become, and I know that the mission has been helping me to do that. Im not sure how it is for other missonaries, but i have been reflecting on it all, the past year that has happened, and also have been setting goals (as instructed by our mission presidents wife): daily goals, weekly, 2-3 months, and yearly ones. I feel that here in Camargo has been the area where I have had the most success, both in terms of the mission and personal spiritual progress. Elder Perez and I are so grateful to be serving together, and we are excited to continue on in our missions, and endure to the end, being missionaries until the day we die.

i honestly cant really remember what happened last monday/tuesday/wednesday, but thursday/friday we had exchanges and I went to another city, Saucillo (sao-see-oh), with my district leaders companion. we had a good time, and cause he is still in training i got to teach him a bot about leaving commitments, and how we have to 1st invite them to do it, second promise blessings, third is bearing testimony (though this can be done at any point of the lesson), and 4th is following up. Preach my gospel is the best! (chapter 11 of preach my gospel)

Saturday was quite the day. we had a great start by going in the morning to help Raul, one of our newer investigators dig a trench on a part of his property in order to be able to put in a drain pipe. got some wicked blisters! still hurt., anyway, it was nice to be able to actually help someone in terms of service like that because everytime we ask if we can help people, people always just say (oh no its all good), but raul was like "well, ok, lets see what you can do!" haha and after inviting him to church, we left and headed to the house to eat. later on in the night, we went with a sister in her ward and her son to go visit a family that she contacted the same morning. she said they would come to church, and so we found 3 new investigators, thanks to the misionary efforts of the sister that we were with, sister Holguin. then, in route to the next house, we found a "former" investigator in the street (pedro, 12 yrs old, long story). He said that he moved in with his moms house, and its a complicated story, but the point is that he couldnt get baptized where he was due to his living situation, but now he can cause he lives with his mom and she says its completely fine if we come and visit him. so then, that was 3 more new investigators, making a total of 6 in the time lapse of an hour. MIRACLES!!!

on sunday, we put on our best ties and shined our shoes up real good because our Mission President, The stake president, and Elder Salinas (area seventy) came to our ward! holy cow i was so nervous! its not like we really had reason to be because we had the possibility of having 12 investigators in the church, but it was just nerve-wrecking because noone big ever comes to camargo. its cause its a really small, kind of "off the map" ward. anyway, the sacrament meeting was excellent. Elder Salinas spoke of many topics, but the main one was of how Heavenly Father Cant take away our trials and hardships, because If he did, we wouldnt be able to progress and learn patience, happiness, etc. I testify that this is true, in the name of our master Jesus Christ, that He will not completely eliminate the challenges in our lives, bit we will lift them to the point where we wont be able to feel them on our backs, that if we follow him, he will place himself by our side under the heavy yoke of iron (trials), and will pull that load with us. In Mosiah 24:14-15, it tells us that God does not forget his people, and that he helps them in their afflictions. I know that this is true, for i have seen it in the last 369 days of my life, as well as throughout my life in its entirety. Later, he said that when he comes back,in january, he wants to see 4 deacons/teachers, and 4 priests...so we got some work to do! Proverbs 3:5-6.

I love you all and i had a great week-i wish the same for you! remember that you are a blessing, a miracle, a son/daughter of God.

love,

Jason

Natalie November 10, 2014

 Hello everyone!

I can't tell you how amazing it is to teach by the Spirit. I know it sounds basic but I am so grateful for the impressions that I have been feeling more and more. In PMG it explains that if you listen to what the people are saying and open your mouth, you will know what to say instead of trying to form a response. I have been seeing this more and more and I love it when my words are faster than my brain can think.I can't believe how many miracles we are seeing. I'm not sure if you remember I think in my first letter I mentioned that my companion said she calls this the island of miracles and I can see why. No matter how small, they're still miracles.

There have been so many people whom when we are in the street, talking to, they say 'oh I'm catholic but I don't really like it' and I just can't believe how many little tender mercies we are experiencing. Another person said, well we're looking for a religion... Hermana Andersen said later..  hmm okay i think we know one! haha and I have discovered our purpose in our area.. along with finding people to teach, our goal is to help the ward gain back animo! Or as Hna. Andersen puts it, 'freshen them up' or something like that. We are planting those seeds and feel that very soon this ward is going to 'explode'! Well I just thought I would share those feelings of success this week.

Also I dreamed in Spanish!! Not the whole dream but at some point someone said a few phrases to me and I remember answering back all in the Spanish language! haha Well I hope you enjoy this next week and remember that sometimes we have to work hard to feel the impressions of the Spirit. This comes with constant and sincere prayer, faith and love for the Lord.

Hasta proximo Lunes!

Marlene came to church!!!!!!!

what a great week!!!

first and foremost, in regards to the subject of the email, our investigator that we had finally was able to come to church! her name is Marlene (mar-lenn), and she has been recieving us for about 2 months. normally, we drop investigators after 3-4 weeks if they arent progressing, but i have always felt that she has so much potential, and that i knew if we trusted in the Lord, and kept on being persistent, she would come, and she did! she loved it and we have an appointment with her tomorrow.  The weather has changed, and this whole last week it rained, and has become colder. We pulled out our jackets and sweaters, and are excited for the fall/christmas time weather to come. hooray for sweater weather!!

On Monday, we had an FHE with our investigator, Mario, at the Familia Holguins house. we taught him about Service, Missionary work, and Family History work. He is so excited to be baptized!! the Spirit was so strong, and I know that he is feeling it. By this day, he had been 2 days smoke free and had completely given up coffee.

Tuesday, We taught Hermana Gonzalez, a less actuve member, about the Melchizedek priesthood and how her husband (who is only a priest) can be ordained and sustained this december when we have Stake Conference. She didnt really understand the priesthood 100%, but after the lesson, she understood better the role that she and her husband play in the family, and how the Melchizedec priesthood is necessary to have in a Christ-centered home, and to be able to enter in the Celestial kingdom as families. later, we got soaked walking over to the Familia Del Real´s to eat. It rained all day!!! Also did visits with the bishop in the evening, but ended early due to the crazy rain!

Wednesday, we went to Delicias (a major city an hour away) for our training meeting with the Mission President. we learned about how to better manage our money, and more basic precautions in our house, and in terms of safety while proselyting. Also, every training meeting with president he always wants to see how we are doing with teaching, and so one missionary or companionship always goes up in front of everyone and teaches president. Guess whose turn it was this time...haha it was a little scary, just cause its president and he is just such a powerful man, but we did well. We taught him about repentance, using Mosiah 3:19 and explaining him that the Natural man is one who offends god, and when we sin, we are "natural men", but with repentance, we can change, become humble, and recieve forgiveness through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. afterwards, he took us all out to eat at a restaurant (2 Zones), and it was so good! we ordered the "parrillada" ("grilled", refers to a pllate of grilled food/meat), which Elder Perez and I split. On the way back we were joined by Elder Smith, who interviewed Mario to be baptized and to spend the night to do exchanges.

Thursday, we had a few lessons with Mario, La Familia torres, and Manuel, a few of our other investigators. I felt the Spirit in each one and I know that as we were patient with our investigators, the Spirit provided us with what we needed to say.

Friday, we also had lots of lessons and visits, of which include teaching Marlene about the Spirit World, Resurrection, Judgement, and the 3 Kingdoms of Glory. she understood it all and is very excited. she even told us in this lesson that she was talking with her boss the other day, who is a member, and her boss had asked her "so you know that its all true, right? what more are you waiting for?" and she had realized "yeah, youre right!" and so that was her motive and reason for finally coming to church. She had previously recieved her answer from our Heavenly Father, and even though it wasnt the answer she was expecting, nor was it a big great and powerful manifestation, but rather a still small whisper, she humbly accepted it and knows the Church is true. She even taught her own family about the trinity, and the nature of God. AWESOME!!!

Saturday was great because we found some new investigators, Ramona and Raul, both of whom we contacted in the Plaza when we put out our table with pamphlets and copies of the Book of Mormon. excited to teach them this week. and also, Mario was Baptized this day!!! It was a small baptismal service, but we are so happy for him as he has now joined his family and is now a member of La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días!

and Sunday, He was confirmed, and also we had other investigators in sacrament meeting other than marlene. their names are andrea and andres, and they are excited to get to know more about the church. they are 14 and 10 years old, and we are planning to have 4 baptisms (Marlene, Karen, Anrea, and Andres) the 29th of november. We also spoke in Sacrament Meeting, and we got to choose our topics. Elder Perez spoke on how we should not judge one another, and I chose the topic of the difference and relation between Testimony and Conversion. It was based of David A. Bednars talk from the October 2012 General Conference. Its so neat, because its really easy to understand how a testimony will not be enough to save us when the Savior comes again, rather both a testimony and Conversion are necessary, and he uses the parable of the 10 virgins (matthew 25:1-13) to explain it. all ten virgins had lamps, but only 5 had oil supplied with their lamps. the lamps are our testimonies, and the Oil represents conversion. Knowing you cant light the lamp without oil, what good is our testimony if we are not also fully converted unto the Lord? I know that if we strive to become more like him everyday, keeping his commandments and following in his footsteps, we will be able to be converted unto the Lord, and we will "have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually". I love you all and wish you all the best week possible. Thank you so much for the part that you (the reader) have played in my life and I know that we all are truly Sons and Daughters of the Most High God. take care, everyone!

love,

Jason

I just have to say I am grateful for Hermana Andersen my companion and her abilities to work with me. And I mean that literally- she is willing to be so patient and truly is there for me to try and understand all so that she can learn how to help me. I am so grateful for her strong desire to do all that she can to teach me well. She is such an example of how we can truly learn to serve others. She wants me to learn the best that she can teach and takes her position as a trainer seriously, meaning that which I have already mentioned: she is trying her best to teach me how I can be my best. I hope that makes sense but more than anything, I am thankful for the chance that we have to work with each other and learn how to kinder to each other's needs. And she is right there with me encouraging me to read the Book of Mormon so I can grow and continue to develop. Thank you for your support! I love you all and am kind of homesick but I'm continuing to think of the people that need me here!

My favorite scripture I read this week was 2 Nephi 4:15-16. We should delight in the scriptures and I am so excited for the opportunity we have to study and divulge in the scriptures! Have a great week.

Jason November 3, 2014

Hey everyone! sorry i have such little time this week, but I wanted to let everyone know that I am doing great, that even though i got sick again this last week (flu), the Zone leaders were able to come over and help us work, and they put 8 baptismal dates with my companion! wow, mucho trabajo! still have a headache, but its nothing i cant handle...but therefore i didnt go out to see anything. but we are very excited for this aturday, where our investigator mario will be getting baptized, and i feel really humbled and honored when he asked me to baptize him. more info next week, but know that all is progressing well here in Camargo, and that I know that My redeemer lives, and I KNOW that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints IS the Lords Church. I love you all and wish you all the best. take care! MORE NEXT WEEK!
